The Northwood Group’s approach to financial advice – putting the client first and operating as a fee-based practice without accepting commissions from insurers and investment companies – is a legacy that makes Nico Kleynhans very proud.
Having founded Northwood on these principles as well as on a reputation for reliable financial advice and a unique approach to financial planning, Northwood’s founder is now taking an active role in training the next generation of students who are working in finance through an innovative internship programme.
In 2010 Nico decided to take action, noting the large numbers of College and University students who struggle to find gainful employment. By developing an Action Learning Programme, he created an opportunity for final year students to bridge their academic knowledge with hands-on experience that will expose them to the practical environment in the financial services industry.
As an active member of CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology)’s Co-operative Education Programme, Nico has arranged for Northwood to take on 8 to 10 interns each year for internships lasting up to three months each. During their time with Northwood these talented young people learn to apply their academic knowledge to the practical requirements of working in the financial services industry.
From taxation to client liaison, participants in the Co Operative Education Programme are exposed to the various departments at Northwood. While learning what a career in financial world involves, the interns are also educated about Northwood’s unique service approach – putting clients first and ensuring that their financial needs are served with personalised advice.
Through this mentorship programme, Nico is confident that the next generation of professionals will enter the jobs market with both practical experience and a commitment to putting their clients first. By instilling good professional values in these talented young people, Northwood is making a difference in industry while equipping tomorrow’s professionals with essential skills that will make them more employable as they make their entry into the world of work.
